Shop, Compare, and Purchase Ladies Coats
What should I look for when buying ladies coats?
Ladies coats are produced by a number of manufacturers and can vary in the quality of the workmanship. There are several clues that coats have been assembled poorly. Loose buttons, hanging threads, and uneven stitching lines are three. Stitches on all sewing lines should be evenly spaced and locked. If there are zippers, they should be the correct gauge for the garment and operate freely.

What is the minimum number of ladies coats a woman should have in her wardrobe?
The number of ladies coats any individual owns will depend on her budget and fashion sense. However, for optimum functionality the magic number is 12. These would consist of:
• 4 winter ladies coats, 1 long and 1 short for casual wear and 1 long and one short for business or dressier occasions;
• 2 water repellent trench coats, 1 in a dark neutral and 1 in a lighter shade;
• 2 spring time ladies coats in pastels or pale neutrals, 1 for casual wear and 1 for business dress;
• 2 summer ladies coats, 1 short sleeved style for wear with sundresses or halter tops and 1 windbreaker style for casual wear;
• 2 ladies coats for autumn, 1 knee-length for business dress and 1 shorter jacket for casual wear.
Why is it best to buy ladies coats with detachable fur trimmed hoods rather than those that are sewn in place?
Furrier method dry cleaning is more expensive than standard dry cleaning. In most cases, the coat will need cleaning more frequently than the hood. If the fur trimmed pieces are detachable and not in need of cleaning, just the coat can be cleaned at a lower cost.
Aren’t all leather ladies coats waterproof?
No, leather has some natural water repellent properties but is not waterproof. Manufacturers can treat the leather (and consumers can continue to treat it) to make it more resistant to water. Untreated leather can become stiff and brittle, so even leather ladies coats that have been treated are not the best choices to wear in heavy rainstorms.
Are ladies coats that are assembled in the U.S. made from U.S. materials?
Not necessarily. With a global market, it is very common for fabrics to originate in one country and be cut or assembled in another. Some manufacturers of ladies coats include a tag detailing the country of origin of all materials, but most often the country of production is the only one shown.
How do you prevent fur ladies coats from shedding?
All furs shed to some degree, but rabbit ladies coats shed more than other furs. There is little that can be done to prevent shedding except to keep the skin from drying out. Stress, such as from a shoulder bag, should not be placed on coats made from rabbit. Treatment by professional furriers can sometimes slow the shedding process.
What are cocoon style ladies coats?
Beginning around 1910, designers of ladies coats started to produce the cocoon coat, which had a slimmer line to match the silhouette of Edwardian fashions. Designers have continued to experiment with the style. In the modern fashion world, manufacturers use the term to describe more than one style of ladies coats. Some use it describe coats with the slim lines of the originals. Others use it to describe coats that are hooded and have muffs sewn into the front.
What is the difference between ladies coats and jackets?
By definition, jackets are short ladies coats. They are also usually, but not always, lighter in weight, therefore not as warm as coats.
